Kṛṣṇa at Duryodhana’s House: Refusal of Hospitality and Departure to Vidura (कृष्णस्य धार्तराष्ट्रनिवेशनगमनम्)

naiva śakyāḥ parājētuṃ sarve hoṣāṃ tathāvidham | pitaraṃ tv eva gṛhyaṃ na ātmānaṃ na suyodhanam ||

Vaiśampāyana said: “They cannot be defeated—those all, being of such a kind.” (The speaker continues:) “Rather, hold fast to your father alone—not to yourself, nor to Suyodhana.” The passage underscores the conviction that the Pāṇḍavas, endowed with the requisite virtues and rightful support, are not easily overcome, and it frames counsel in terms of loyalty to rightful authority and restraint from self-willed aggression.

Educational Q&A

The verse stresses that moral and strategic strength grounded in dharma makes the righteous difficult to defeat, and it frames ethical counsel as obedience to rightful authority (the father/king) rather than impulsive self-assertion or alignment with Suyodhana’s obstinacy.

In the Udyoga Parva’s pre-war counsel, the narration affirms the Pāṇḍavas’ invincibility due to their qualities and urges a stance of restraint: adhere to the father (Dhṛtarāṣṭra) rather than acting independently or siding with Suyodhana, anticipating the coming conflict and its outcome.
