Arjuna’s Address to Krishna: Agency, Action, and Immediate Counsel
I spoke these words with affection only to understand your state of mind—not to accuse you, display learning, vent anger, or deliver a lecture. I know your greatness; I know the strength and valor that are in you; and your mighty deeds are not hidden from me. Therefore I do not speak to belittle you.
Even when correcting or probing someone’s intentions, one should speak without contempt. Acknowledging another’s virtues and past deeds keeps counsel ethical and prevents anger or ego from turning guidance into insult.
In the tense lead-up to war, the speaker addresses Bhīmasena, affirming full awareness of his greatness, strength, and heroic deeds, and clarifying that the earlier remarks were meant affectionately to understand his mindset—not to disparage him.
