Udyoga-parva Adhyāya 71 — Kṣatra-dharma Counsel, Public Legitimacy, and Mobilization
yudhiṣṭhira uvāca
na mamaitanmataṃ kṛṣṇa yat tvaṃ yāyāḥ kurūn prati |
suyodhanaḥ sūktam api na kariṣyati te vacaḥ ||
Yudhiṣṭhira said: “Kṛṣṇa, this is not my considered view—that you should go to the Kurus. For Suyodhana will not act upon your words, even if they are well-spoken and wholesome.”
Wise counsel alone does not ensure ethical action; when a leader is ruled by obstinacy and adharma, even sound advice may fail. The verse highlights discernment in diplomacy and the moral tragedy of refusing good counsel.
As peace efforts are being considered before the great war, Yudhiṣṭhira expresses reluctance about Kṛṣṇa going to the Kuru side as an emissary, fearing that Duryodhana (Suyodhana) will disregard even Kṛṣṇa’s best words.
