Udyoga-parva Adhyāya 71 — Kṣatra-dharma Counsel, Public Legitimacy, and Mobilization

Yudhiṣṭhira uvāca: śrutaṁ te dhṛtarāṣṭrasya saputrasya cikīrṣitam | etad dhi sakalaṁ kṛṣṇa saṁjayo māṁ yad abravīt |

Yudhiṣṭhira said: “You have already heard, O Kṛṣṇa, what Dhṛtarāṣṭra—together with his sons—intends to do. Indeed, everything that Saṁjaya reported to me is nothing but Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s own view and resolve.”

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights ethical discernment in political communication: a messenger’s words often represent the sender’s intent. Yudhiṣṭhira treats Saṁjaya’s report as Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s own resolve, emphasizing responsibility for intentions conveyed through envoys.

In the Udyoga Parva’s pre-war negotiations, Yudhiṣṭhira addresses Kṛṣṇa, stating that Kṛṣṇa has already heard Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s plans (with his sons). Yudhiṣṭhira affirms that Saṁjaya’s message to him reflects Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s position.
