Udyoga-parva Adhyāya 71 — Kṣatra-dharma Counsel, Public Legitimacy, and Mobilization

ये होव धीरा ह्वीमन्‍त आर्या: करुणवेदिन:,जो लोग धीर-वीर, लज्जाशील, श्रेष्ठ और दयालु हैं, वे ही प्राय: युद्धमें मारे जाते हैं और अधम श्रेणीके मनुष्य जीवित बच जाते हैं। जनार्दन! शत्रुओंको मारनेपर भी उनके लिये सदा मनमें पश्चात्ताप बना रहता है

ye ha vā dhīrā hrīmantā āryāḥ karuṇavedinaḥ | te hi prāyo yuddhe hanyante ’dhamā jīvanti mānavāḥ || janārdana! śatrūn hatvāpi teṣāṃ sadā manasi paścāttāpo bhavati ||

Those who are steadfast, modest, noble, and compassionate—such people, it seems, are the ones most often slain in war, while men of a baser sort survive. O Janārdana, even after killing enemies, there remains an abiding remorse in the heart on their account.
