Udyoga Parva 63: Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s Counsel Reminding Duryodhana of Opponent Strength
sambhojanaṃ saṃkathanaṃ sampraśno ’tha samāgamaḥ | etāni jñātikāryāṇi na virodhaḥ kadācana ||
Vidura says: Sharing a meal together, speaking with affection, inquiring after one another’s welfare, and maintaining regular association—these are the proper duties among kinsmen. Mutual hostility, however, is never right.
Vidura defines the marks of kinship-dharma: shared meals, affectionate conversation, concern for each other’s welfare, and continued association. He condemns virodha (hostility) among relatives as always improper.
In Udyoga Parva, as tensions rise toward war, Vidura offers moral counsel aimed at preventing rupture within the Kuru family. This verse frames practical, everyday behaviors that sustain unity and contrasts them with the destructive choice of mutual opposition.
