Adhyaya 60: Self-Assertion, Daiva, and the Rhetoric of Inevitability (उद्योग पर्व)

अकामद्वेषसंयोगलो भद्रोहाच्च भारत । उपेक्षया च भावानां देवा देवत्वमाप्रुवन्‌,“भरतनन्दन! काम (राग), द्वेष, संयोग (ममता), लोभ और दट्रोह (क्रोध)-रूपी दोषोंसे रहित होनेके कारण तथा दूषित भावोंकी उपेक्षा कर देनेके कारण ही देवताओंने देवत्व प्राप्त किया है

vaiśampāyana uvāca |

akāmadveṣasaṃyogalobhadrohācca bhārata |

upekṣayā ca bhāvānāṃ devā devatvam āpruvan ||

“O Bhārata, the gods attained their divine status because they were free from the faults of desire (attachment), hatred, possessive clinging, greed, and hostile wrath, and because they disregarded and set aside corrupting mental dispositions.”
