Udyoga-parva Adhyāya 47 — Arjuna’s Deterrent Declaration
Sañjaya’s Report
vāsaḥ kṛcchro vihitaś cāpy araṇye dīrgha-kālaṁ caikam ajñāta-varṣam | te hi kasmāj jīvatāṁ pāṇḍavānāṁ nandiṣyante dhārtarāṣṭrāḥ padasthāḥ ||
Sanjaya said: “A harsh life in the forest was imposed on them, and for a long time; and then there was the single year of living in concealment. While the Pandavas are still alive, how could the sons of Dhritarashtra, remaining secure in their positions, continue to rejoice?”

The verse underscores moral accountability: those who have caused or benefited from another’s unjust suffering cannot ethically remain complacent or celebratory, especially while the wronged parties still live and retain rightful claims.
Sanjaya recalls the Pandavas’ forced hardships—long forest exile and the year of incognito living—and questions how the Kauravas can remain happily established in power despite the Pandavas’ continued existence and unresolved injustice.
