tasmād rājan! yena samastakauravāṇāṁ hitaṁ bhavet, tad eva vacanaṁ te vakṣyāmi | yat kalyāṇakāri dharmayuktaṁ vacanaṁ mayā ucyate, tat tvam avadhānena śṛṇu || mithyopetāni karmāṇi sidhyeyur yāni bhārata | anupāyaprayuktāni mā sma teṣu manaḥ kṛthāḥ ||
Therefore, O King, I shall tell you only what will truly serve the welfare of all the Kauravas. Listen attentively to these words of mine, which are beneficial and grounded in dharma. O Bharata, do not set your mind on achievements gained through deceit—works that succeed by wrongful, improper means. Do not be drawn toward such ends, even if they appear to ‘work’ for a time.
Vidura urges the king to prioritize the true welfare of the Kauravas by adhering to dharma: even if deceitful actions succeed temporarily, one should not become mentally committed to goals achieved through improper, unjust means.
In Udyoga Parva, Vidura addresses the king (implicitly Dhṛtarāṣṭra) with ethical counsel, warning him against policies and decisions that rely on deception and illegitimate stratagems, and asking him to listen carefully to dharma-based advice meant to protect the Kaurava house.
