Udyoga-parva Adhyāya 28: Dharmādharmalakṣaṇa in Āpad

Crisis-Discernment of Right and Wrong

suduṣkaras tatra śamo hi nūnaṁ pradarśitaḥ sañjaya pāṇḍavena | yasmin gṛddho dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ saputraḥ kasmād eṣāṁ kalaho nāvamucchyet, sañjaya ||

O Sañjaya, the peace that the Pāṇḍava has shown there is indeed exceedingly hard to sustain. For in that very kingdom to which Dhṛtarāṣṭra, together with his sons, is greedily attached and longs to possess—how could strife between these Kauravas and Pāṇḍavas fail to flare up and grow?

Educational Q&A

Peace (śama) is fragile when leaders are driven by possessiveness and greed. Even a righteous party’s willingness to reconcile cannot prevent conflict if the opposing side remains attached to unjust acquisition; ethical restraint must be shared to be effective.

Vāyudeva addresses Sañjaya, reflecting on the political deadlock: Yudhiṣṭhira has demonstrated a commitment to peace, yet Dhṛtarāṣṭra and his sons are covetous of the kingdom. Given that attachment, Vāyudeva argues that a quarrel between the two factions is almost inevitable.
