मतो हि मे शक्रसमो धनंजय: सनातनो वृष्णिवीरश्व विष्णु: । धर्मारामो ह्लीनिषेवस्तरस्वी कुन्तीपुत्र: पाण्डवोडजातशत्रु:,मुझे तो अर्जुन इन्द्रके समान प्रतीत होते हैं और वृष्णिवीर श्रीकृष्ण सनातन विष्णु जान पड़ते हैं। कुन्तीनन्दन पाण्डुपुत्र युधिष्ठिर धर्माचरणमें ही सुख मानते हैं। वे लज्जाशील और बलशाली हैं। उनके मनमें किसीके प्रति कभी शत्रुभाव नहीं पैदा हुआ है। नहीं तो वे मनस्वी युधिष्ठिर दुर्योधनके द्वारा छल-कपटके शिकार होनेपर क्रोध करके मेरे सभी पुत्रोंको जलाकर भस्म कर देते। संजय! मैं अर्जुन, भगवान्‌ श्रीकृष्ण, भीमसेन तथा नकुल-सहदेवसे भी उतना नहीं डरता, जितना कि क्रोधसे तमतमाये हुए राजा युधिष्ठिरके कोपसे। उनके रोषसे मैं सदा ही अत्यन्त भयभीत रहता हूँ; क्योंकि वे महान्‌ तपस्वी और ब्रह्मचर्यसे सम्पन्न हैं, इसलिये उनके मनमें जो संकल्प होगा, वह सिद्ध होकर ही रहेगा

mato hi me śakrasamo dhanañjayaḥ sanātano vṛṣṇivīraś ca viṣṇuḥ | dharmārāmo hrīniṣevas tarasvī kuntīputraḥ pāṇḍavo ’jātaśatruḥ ||

Vaiśampāyana said: “To me, Dhananjaya (Arjuna) appears equal to Śakra (Indra), and Kṛṣṇa, the heroic Vṛṣṇi, seems to be the eternal Viṣṇu himself. The Pāṇḍava, Kuntī’s son—Ajātaśatru (Yudhiṣṭhira)—finds his joy in dharma; he is modest in conduct and strong in spirit. In him no enmity is ever born toward anyone.”

The verse praises an ethical ideal of kingship: Yudhishthira is portrayed as one who delights in dharma, practices modest restraint, and is naturally free from enmity (ajātaśatru).
