Bhīṣma’s Retrospective of the Jāmadagnya Rāma Encounter

Divyāstra-Pratiyuddha and Twilight Cessation

Bhīṣma said: Paraśurāma bore a vast bow. When he raised an arrow against me, the compassionate great seers restrained him. That arrow was dreadful, like the fire of Kālāgni. The Bhārgava, immeasurable in spirit, though enraged, heeded the sages and withdrew that weapon. Then the sun, its softened rays and disc veiled by dust from the battlefield, sank to the western horizon. Night came, and a pleasant, cool breeze began to blow. At that time, the two of us suspended the combat.

Educational Q&A

Even in a righteous conflict, discipline and restraint govern action: sages can curb destructive wrath, and combat is suspended with nightfall—signaling that dharma limits violence and demands self-control.

As the battlefield dust veils the sun and evening arrives, night and a cool breeze set in; Bhīṣma says that he and Paraśurāma then stop fighting for the time being.
