Adhyāya 152: Kaurava-sainyavibhāgaḥ
Division and Standardization of the Kaurava Host

Vaiśampāyana said: The city-scene around King Duryodhana appeared like a vast ocean at moonrise—exultant and swelling. The moving crowds seemed like whirlpools; chariots, elephants, and horses like fish within it. The blare of conches and the beat of kettledrums were its thunder. Hoarded treasures stood in for heaps of gems. Warriors’ varied ornaments and armor looked like rising waves, and the gleam of polished weapons like clear foam. Rows of palaces resembled mountains along the shore, and the shops lining the streets seemed like caves—an image of worldly splendor gathering force on the eve of war, dazzling yet ominous in its momentum.
The verse highlights how collective excitement, wealth, and military display can swell like an ocean—dazzling in appearance yet carrying an ominous force. It implicitly cautions that power and splendor, when yoked to impending conflict, can intoxicate a polity and obscure ethical restraint.
Vaiśampāyana depicts the scene around Duryodhana and the Kaurava center as a grand, crowded, militarized spectacle. Using an ocean simile, he maps people, animals, instruments, weapons, and buildings onto waves, whirlpools, thunder, foam, and shore-mountains, conveying the surge of preparations and public movement as war approaches.
