Karna–Krishna Dialogue: Omens and Dream-Signs
sañjaya uvāca | yadā drakṣyasi saṅgrāme droṇaṃ śāntanavaṃ kṛpam | suyodhanaṃ ca rājānaṃ saindhavaṃ ca jayadratham ||
Sañjaya said: When, on the battlefield, you behold Droṇa, Śāntanava Bhīṣma, Kṛpa, King Suyodhana (Duryodhana), and the Sindhu ruler Jayadratha—then (seeing them advance for war and their onset checked) you will be struck with astonishment. In that moment your mind will be so shaken that even the distinctions of the ages—Satya, Tretā, and Dvāpara—will not occur to you.
The verse underscores the moral and psychological weight of war: when great elders and renowned kings enter battle, the onlooker’s certainties collapse. It hints that adharma-driven conflict produces bewilderment and dread, overwhelming even learned frameworks (such as reflections on the yugas).
Sañjaya addresses Dhṛtarāṣṭra, forecasting a battlefield scene where major Kaurava champions—Droṇa, Bhīṣma, Kṛpa, Duryodhana, and Jayadratha—are seen advancing. The implication is that their movement and momentum will be checked by the opposing hero (commonly understood as Arjuna), leaving Dhṛtarāṣṭra stunned.
