उद्योगपर्व — अध्याय १४० (कृष्णेन कर्णं प्रति पाण्डवबल-वैशिष्ट्यप्रदर्शनम्) / Udyoga Parva, Chapter 140
Krishna’s appraisal of Pandava advantage and war portents
स हि मे जातकर्मादि कारयामास माधव । शास्त्रदृष्टेन विधिना पुत्रप्रीत्या जनार्दन
sa hi me jātakarmādi kārayāmāsa mādhava | śāstradṛṣṭena vidhinā putraprītyā janārdana ||
“For he, O Mādhava, had my birth-rites and other sacraments performed according to the procedure laid down in the scriptures—out of affection for me as his son, O Janārdana.”
कर्ण उवाच
Karṇa highlights that performing a child’s saṁskāras according to śāstra is a profound act of parental responsibility; such care creates a binding moral claim of gratitude and loyalty, shaping one’s sense of duty even in times of political and martial crisis.
Karṇa addresses Kṛṣṇa (as Mādhava/Janārdana) and recalls how ‘he’—Karṇa’s foster-father—arranged Karṇa’s birth-rites and other sacraments in the proper scriptural manner, motivated by love for him as a son. Karṇa uses this remembrance to justify his steadfast allegiance.
