Udyoga-parva Adhyāya 137 — Bhīṣma–Droṇa Counsel and the Ethics of Restraint
praśādhi pṛthivīṃ kṛtsnāṃ tatas tvaṃ bhrātṛbhiḥ saha | samāliṅgya ca harṣeṇa nṛpā yāntu parasparam ||
Vaiśampāyana said: “Rule the entire earth; then you, together with your brothers, should govern. And let the kings, embracing one another in joy and reconciliation, depart from here in mutual goodwill.”
The verse upholds rājadharma: rightful governance should be exercised in unity with one’s kin, and political order is ideally restored through reconciliation—kings part in mutual goodwill rather than hostility.
Vaiśampāyana narrates a counsel or outcome in which the addressee is urged to govern the whole realm with his brothers, while the assembled kings are envisioned leaving after joyfully embracing one another, signaling a hoped-for settlement and peace.
