Kuntī’s Message to Kṛṣṇa
śocantam anuśocanti patitān iva bāndhavān | api te pūjitāḥ pūrvam api te suhṛdo matāḥ |
“Those who, seeing a king in distress, grieve along with him—lamenting as though their own close kinsmen had fallen—did you regard such people as your true well-wishers? And did you formerly honor them as friends?”
True friendship is tested in adversity: those who share another’s sorrow as their own and remain emotionally aligned in crisis are the kind of well-wishers worthy of being recognized and honored.
A son addresses an elder (implied ‘you’) and questions his judgment about allies and friends, pointing to people who grieve with the king in misfortune and asking whether such sympathetic supporters were treated as genuine friends and honored earlier.
