मातोवाच सर्वावस्था हि विदुषां तात धर्मार्थकारणात्‌ | तावेवाभिसमीक्ष्याहं संजय त्वामचूचुदम्‌,माता बोली--तात संजय! विद्वानोंकी सारी अवस्था भी धर्म और अर्थके निमित्त ही होती है। उन्हीं दोनोंकी ओर दृष्टि रखकर मैंने भी तुझे युद्धके लिये प्रेरित किया है

mātovāca sarvāvasthā hi viduṣāṃ tāta dharmārthakāraṇāt | tāv evābhisamīkṣyāhaṃ sañjaya tvām acūcudam ||

The mother said: “Dear son, every condition and course of life of the wise is undertaken for the sake of dharma and artha. Keeping precisely these two in view, O Sañjaya, I too urged you on toward the war.”
