mahāvega ivoddhūto mātariśvā balāhakān | teṣām agrapradāyī syāḥ kalyotthāyī priyaṃvadaḥ ||

The son said: “Just as the mighty Wind, roused to tremendous speed, drives and shatters the clouds, so must you now reveal the purposeful effort (purushārtha) you desire. Win over—by gifts, honor, and vigilant care—those angered at the king of Sindhu, those whose minds are drawn by wealth, those utterly worn down by the Sindhu ruler’s assaults, those proud of their own strength and manliness, and those who, having been insulted by your enemies, sit poised to take revenge. By such prudent generosity you will split even the greatest coalition, as the swift, powerful wind breaks apart the masses of cloud.”

Educational Q&A

Political success can be achieved by discerning people’s motives and grievances and then winning them through timely generosity, honor, and persuasive speech; this can fracture even a strong opposing coalition.

A son advises a ruler/leader to reveal his intended policy and actively recruit disaffected or ambitious groups—especially those hostile to the Sindhu ruler or insulted by enemies—using gifts and respect, likening the resulting breakup of the enemy camp to wind scattering clouds.
