Etymology of Wealth and the Gurudakṣiṇā Predicament of Gālava
Viśvāmitro ’tha taṃ dṛṣṭvā Gālavaṃ cādhvani sthitaḥ | uvāca vadatāṃ śreṣṭho Vainateyasya saṃnidhau ||
Then Viśvāmitra, seeing Gālava on the road, stood there and—being foremost among speakers—addressed him in the very presence of Vainateya (Garuḍa).
Wise speech carries ethical force: when a sage renowned for truthful, effective counsel speaks—especially before a powerful witness—his words are meant to orient action toward dharma and responsible resolution of one’s obligations.
Viśvāmitra notices Gālava traveling on the road and stops to address him, with Garuḍa (Vainateya) present. The verse sets the stage for guidance or instruction that follows in the episode.
