Udyoga Parva Adhyāya 103: Garuḍa’s Protest, Viṣṇu’s Demonstration, and Counsel Toward Śama

अनेन विजितानबश्नैर्दोर्भ्यां जयति वासव: । अनेन बलभित्‌ पूर्व प्रह्ते प्रहरत्युत,ये अपने अभश्वोंद्वारा जिन शत्रुओंको जीत लेते हैं, उन्हींको देवराज इन्द्र अपने बाहुबलसे पराजित करते हैं। पहले इनके द्वारा प्रहार हो जानेपर ही बलनाशक इन्द्र शत्रुओंपर प्रहार करते हैं

Through him, Vāsava (Indra) conquers with the strength of his arms those foes whom this one has first subdued. Only after he has struck the opening blow does “Balabhit”—Indra, the breaker of the enemy’s might—deal his blows upon the adversaries.
