Chapter 86
भीष्म उवाच एवमेतन्महाप्राज्ञ यथा वदसि बुद्धिमन् । दुर्लभ: पुरुष: कश्रिदेभियुक्तो गुणै: शूभै:,भीष्मजीने कहा--महा प्राज्ञ! परम बुद्धिमान् युधिष्ठिर! तुम जैसा कहते हो, वह ठीक ऐसा ही है। वस्तुत: इन सभी शुभ गुणोंसे सम्पन्न किसी एक पुरुषका मिलना कठिन है
bhīṣma uvāca | evam etan mahāprājña yathā vadasi buddhiman | durlabhaḥ puruṣaḥ kaścid ebhiyukto guṇaiḥ śubhaiḥ ||
Bhishma said: “So it is, O great sage; just as you say, O wise one. Indeed, it is rare to find even a single man who is endowed with these auspicious virtues.”
भीष्म उवाच
Bhishma affirms that truly virtuous character—where many auspicious qualities are united in one person—is uncommon, implying that ethical excellence requires exceptional cultivation and is not easily found.
In the Shanti Parva dialogue, Bhishma responds to Yudhishthira’s statement about noble qualities, agreeing with him and emphasizing the rarity of a person who possesses all such virtues.
