Chapter 78: Royal Responsibility for Wealth, Social Order, and the Protection of Dvijas
Kekaya Exemplum
दानेन विद्यामभिवान् छयामि सत्येनार्थ ब्राह्मणानां च गुप्त्या शुश्रूषया चापि गुरूनुपैमि न मे भयं विद्यते राक्षसेभ्य:,मैं धन देकर विद्या पानेकी इच्छा रखता हूँ। सत्यके पालन तथा ब्राह्मणोंके संरक्षणद्वारा अभीष्ट अर्थ (पुण्यलोकोंपर अधिकार) पाना चाहता हूँ तथा सेवा-शुश्रूषाद्वारा गुरुजनोंको संतुष्ट करनेके लिये उनके पास जाता हूँ; अतः मुझे राक्षसोंसे कभी भय नहीं है
dānena vidyām abhivāñchayāmi satyenārthaṃ brāhmaṇānāṃ ca guptyā | śuśrūṣayā cāpi gurūn upaimi na me bhayaṃ vidyate rākṣasebhyaḥ ||
Bhishma said: “By giving in charity I seek to gain true learning; by truthfulness and by safeguarding the Brahmins I seek the desired end—merit and rightful access to the higher worlds. And through service and attentive obedience I approach my teachers to please them. Therefore, I have no fear of the rākṣasas.”
भीष्म उवाच
