Educational Q&A

The verse highlights the ethical power of gentle, truthful, and pleasing speech: it creates trust and friendship, making moral instruction possible. Right speech (vāṅ-mādhurya) becomes a gateway to dharmic counsel.

A Brāhmaṇa addresses an unnamed interlocutor respectfully as “blameless,” saying that the person’s sweet words have inspired affection and friendship; on that basis, the Brāhmaṇa prepares to offer advice and asks the listener to pay attention.
