Vaiśampāyana said: “O best among the wise, for the purpose of explaining the Veda you should compile and arrange the revealed texts (śruti)—Ṛk, Sāman, Yajus, and the rest—each separately. Therefore, carry out the work exactly as I have instructed, O sage. This is my directive to you.”
वैशम्पायन उवाच
That Vedic knowledge should be preserved and taught through disciplined organization of śruti—collecting and arranging the Vedic materials (Ṛk, Sāman, Yajus, etc.) distinctly—so that explanation and instruction remain accurate and authoritative.
Vaiśampāyana issues a direct instruction to a sage: to undertake the task of compiling/arranging the śruti for the purpose of Vedic exposition, and to execute the work exactly as commanded.
