Vaiśampāyana said: “Reciting and repeatedly reviewing the Vedas together with their ancillary disciplines, and also expounding in every way the meanings of the Mahābhārata, Vyāsa would teach us disciples. Ever attentive and disciplined, we continually served that teacher—single-minded in concentration, self-controlled, and steadfast in spiritual discipline.”
वैशम्पायन उवाच
True learning is portrayed as a disciplined tradition: mastery through repeated recitation and careful interpretation, grounded in the student’s attentive service and the teacher’s self-control and single-pointed focus.
Vaiśampāyana recalls the period of study under Vyāsa: Vyāsa recites and teaches the Vedas (with their auxiliaries) and explains the Mahābhārata’s meanings, while the disciples remain vigilant and devoted in serving him.
