Reflection on the Many ‘Doors’ of Dharma (Śānti-parva 342)

Arjuna said: “I have heard from you that there are four kinds of devotees—those distressed, those who seek to know, those who seek gain, and the wise. Among them, those who worship you alone with single-minded devotion, not accepting other deities as their chosen object of worship, are the highest. For those devotees who perform all actions without desire for reward, you alone are the supreme goal. As for the remaining three types of devotees, they are regarded as motivated by the desire for results; therefore they are subject to falling away—after enjoying the fruits of merit, they slip from heaven and other worlds. But the awakened, wise devotee partakes of the most excellent fruit: attainment of the Lord.”
