putrārtha-bhārādhitavān aham ātmānam ātmanā | pāṇḍavān ānanditavāle arjuna! mām dvitīyo na kaścid varaṃ dātuṃ śaknoti; iti matvā putra-prāptyai svayam eva sva-ātma-svarūpaṃ purāṇa-puruṣaṃ jagad-īśvaraṃ rudram ārādhitavān asmi |
Arjuna said: “Seeking the boon of a son, I undertook a weighty act of worship by my own resolve. Thinking, ‘No one else can grant me this boon,’ I worshipped Rudra—who is the ancient Person, the Lord of the universe, and in truth my own Self—so that I might obtain a son.”
