Vyāsa said: “Now I shall tell you of those acts that must not be done. Understand them from me. They stand opposed to both common moral order in the world and the authority of the Veda; therefore listen with a single-pointed mind.”

Educational Q&A

Vyāsa frames a standard for rejecting actions: any deed that contradicts both worldly ethical order (loka) and Vedic/scriptural authority (veda) is to be treated as akārya—something that should not be done—and the listener should attend with focused discernment.

In the didactic setting of Śānti Parva, Vyāsa addresses his listener and transitions into a list or explanation of prohibited conduct, urging concentrated listening before he enumerates acts that violate social morality and Vedic injunctions.
