Instruction on Kāla and the Removal of Grief
अकार्याणि तु वक्ष्यामि यानि तानि निबोध मे । लोकवेदविरुद्धानि तान्येकाग्रमना: शृणु,इनके सिवा, जो लोक और वेदसे विरुद्ध न करनेयोग्य कर्म हैं, उन्हें भी बताता हूँ। तुम एकाग्रचित होकर सुनो और समझो
akāryāṇi tu vakṣyāmi yāni tāni nibodha me | lokavedaviruddhāni tāny ekāgramanāḥ śṛṇu ||
Vyāsa said: “Now I shall tell you of those acts that must not be done. Understand them from me. They stand opposed to both common moral order in the world and the authority of the Veda; therefore listen with a single-pointed mind.”
व्यास उवाच
Vyāsa frames a standard for rejecting actions: any deed that contradicts both worldly ethical order (loka) and Vedic/scriptural authority (veda) is to be treated as akārya—something that should not be done—and the listener should attend with focused discernment.
In the didactic setting of Śānti Parva, Vyāsa addresses his listener and transitions into a list or explanation of prohibited conduct, urging concentrated listening before he enumerates acts that violate social morality and Vedic injunctions.
