Utkramaṇa-sthāna and Ariṣṭa-lakṣaṇa: Yājñavalkya’s Instruction on Departure Pathways and Mortality Signs

पुमांश्चैवापुमांश्चैव त्रैलिड्रयं प्राकृतं स्‍्मृतम्‌ । न वापुमान्‌ पुमांश्चैव स लिज्लीत्यभिधीयते,पुरुष और प्रकृति--ये दो तत्त्व हैं। इनके स्वरूपको व्यक्त करनेवाले जो तीन प्रकारके सात््विक, राजस और तामस चिह्न हैं, वे सब प्राकृत माने गये हैं; परंतु जो लिंगी अर्थात्‌ इन सबका आधार आत्मा है, वह न पुरुष कहा जा सकता है और न प्रकृति ही। वह इन दोनोंसे विलक्षण है

puṁś caivāpuṁś caiva trailiṅgyaṁ prākṛtaṁ smṛtam | na vāpuṁān puṁś caiva sa liṅgīty abhidhīyate ||

Vasiṣṭha said: “Both ‘male’ and ‘non-male,’ and indeed the triad of gender-marks, are remembered as belonging to Prakṛti (material nature). But the one who bears (and underlies) these marks—the Liṅgī, the Self that is their support—is neither to be called male nor non-male. He is distinct from both Puruṣa and Prakṛti, transcending their classifications.”
