Adhyātma–Adhibhūta–Adhidaivata Correspondences and the Triguṇa Lakṣaṇas (Śānti-parva 301)
शिष्टं तत्र मनस्तात इन्द्रियाणि च भारत । आगच्छन्ति यथाकालं गुरो: संदेशकारिण:,भरतनन्दन! इस प्रकार जीवन्मुक्त पुरुषका आत्मा तो परमात्मामें मिल जाता है, परंतु प्रारब्धवश जबतक शरीर रहता है, तबतक उसके मन और इन्द्रियाँ शेष रहते हैं और गुरुके आदेश पालन करनेवाले शिष्योंके समान यथासमय यहाँ गमनागमन करते हैं
śiṣṭaṃ tatra manas tāta indriyāṇi ca bhārata | āgacchanti yathākālaṃ guroḥ saṃdeśakāriṇaḥ ||
Bhīṣma said: “Dear one, O Bhārata, there the mind and the senses remain as a residue. O descendant of Bharata, they come and go in due season—like disciples who act only in accordance with the teacher’s instruction.”
भीष्म उवाच
Even for one who is liberated while living, the mind and senses may continue to function due to residual momentum (prārabdha). Yet they no longer rule the person; they operate in an orderly, time-bound way, like disciplined students obeying a guru.
In Bhīṣma’s instruction to Yudhiṣṭhira in the Śānti Parva, he explains the post-realization condition: the self is established in the Supreme, while the remaining psycho-physical instruments (mind and senses) continue their limited activity until the body’s destined course ends.
