Chapter 29
शम्यापातेनाभ्यतीयाद् वेदीभिभ्षित्रयन् महीम् । ईजान: क्रतुभिर्मुख्यै: पर्यगच्छद् वसुन्धराम्,“सूंजय! नहुषपुत्र राजा ययाति भी जीवित न रह सके--यह हमने सुना है। उन्होंने समुद्रोंसहित इस सारी पृथ्वीको जीतकर शम्यापातके- द्वारा पृथ्वीको नाप-नापकर यज्ञकी वेदियाँ बनायीं, जिनसे भूतलकी विचित्र शोभा होने लगी। उन्हीं वेदियोंपर मुख्य-मुख्य यज्ञोंका अनुष्ठान करते हुए उन्होंने सारी भारतभूमिकी परिक्रमा कर डाली
śamyāpātenābhyatīyād vedībhir bhūṣitrayan mahīm | ījānaḥ kratubhir mukhyaiḥ paryagacchad vasundharām |
Vāyu said: “By the rite called śamyāpāta he measured out the earth, adorning it with sacrificial altars. Performing the foremost sacrifices, he then went about the whole land. Thus did King Yayāti, son of Nahuṣa—of whom we have heard that he could not remain long in life—having conquered the entire earth together with its seas, mark it with altars and traverse it in the course of his great ritual acts.”
