Adhyāya 284: Tapas as a Corrective to Household Attachment

Parāśara’s Instruction

यज्ञवाहाय दान्ताय तप्यायातपनाय च | नमस्तटाय तट्याय तटानां पतये नमः

yajñavāhāya dāntāya tapyāyātapanāya ca | namas taṭāya taṭyāya taṭānāṃ pataye namaḥ ||

Bhīṣma offers reverential salutations to the sacred power addressed here: the bearer of sacrifice, the self-restrained, tapas itself—the ascetic heat—and the one who endures heat; to the river-bank and what belongs to the bank; and again to the lord of all banks.
