Yudhiṣṭhira uvāca: Vṛtreṇa paramārthajña dṛṣṭā manye ’tmano gatiḥ | śubhā tasmāt sa sukhito na śocati pitāmaha ||
Yudhiṣṭhira said: “O Grandfather, knower of the highest truth, I believe that Vṛtra beheld the true course of the Self—auspicious and real. Therefore he was at peace and did not grieve.”
युधिछिर उवाच
Direct realization of the Self (ātma-darśana) brings inner auspiciousness and freedom from sorrow; one who knows the highest truth remains content even amid suffering or death.
In the Śānti Parva dialogue, Yudhiṣṭhira addresses Bhīṣma as a knower of ultimate truth and reflects on Vṛtrāsura, saying that Vṛtra must have realized the true nature and destiny of the Self, which is why he remained ungrieving and peaceful.
