Discrimination of Elements, Senses, Mind, Intellect, and Inner Self

Vyāsa said: One who follows the yamas (restraints) feels no distress in practicing them; and, empowered by the mantras and the guiding aphorisms of his own śāstra, he shows steady zeal to offer his entire being as an oblation into the fire of renunciation. For such a knower of the Self—self-controlled and devoted to dharma—there is no doubt that he attains the course he seeks, even liberation itself.
A self-knower who practices ethical restraints without inner strain, and who lives in the spirit of total renunciation as prescribed by śāstra, certainly attains the highest goal—there is no doubt about liberation for the self-controlled and dharma-centered.
In the Śānti Parva’s instruction on peace and liberation, Vyāsa describes the marks of a realized renunciant: disciplined in yamas, energized by scriptural guidance, and offering the self into renunciation, thereby reaching the desired spiritual destination.
