tatastam upasarpanti guṇā rājasatāmasāḥ | sāttvikā vā yathāyogam ānantarya-phalodayam ||
Bhishma said: Thereafter, the guṇas—sattva, rajas, and tamas—approach that person in accordance with his disposition, bringing forth the immediate rise of their corresponding results, experienced as happiness or suffering (as in dreamlike or hellish visions).
भीष्म उवाच
Experience (pleasure or pain) arises according to the predominance of sattva, rajas, or tamas; these guṇas ‘come near’ and yield their fitting results without delay, emphasizing moral causality and inner disposition.
Bhīṣma explains to the listener that once a certain state is reached (contextually linked with visions like dream/hellish experiences), the guṇas become operative and produce corresponding सुख-दुःख (happiness-suffering) outcomes in line with one’s condition.
