Restraint of the Senses, Non-harming Truthful Speech, and Discernment of Karmic Consequence
marīceḥ kaśyapaḥ putras tasya dve nāmanī smṛte | ariṣṭanemir ity eke kaśyapety apare viduḥ ||
Bhishma said: Marichi’s son is Kashyapa. Tradition remembers that he is known by two names: some call him Ariṣṭanemi, while others recognize him by the name Kashyapa.
The verse emphasizes fidelity to received tradition (smṛti) while acknowledging that authoritative knowledge can preserve multiple names for the same figure; careful identification supports accurate understanding of dharma-related narratives and lineages.
Bhishma is clarifying a genealogical point: Kaśyapa, the son of Marīci, is referred to by two names in different traditions—Ariṣṭanemi and Kaśyapa—so the listener does not mistake them as separate persons.
