Bhīṣma said: A capable practitioner who truly understands yoga should not chase sensory objects—he should not seek sound through the ear, not register touch through the skin, not apprehend form through the eye, and not grasp tastes through the tongue. Likewise, through meditative discipline he should relinquish even all objects of smell, and he should not, even in the mind, entertain desire for these sense-objects that agitate and churn the five senses. The teaching emphasizes inner restraint and the ethical mastery of desire as the basis of steadiness and liberation.
