Manu’s Instruction on Elemental Origination, Sense-Withdrawal, and Discrimination of the Supreme Nature
पुरुषे तिष्ठती बुद्धिस्त्रिषु भावेषु वर्तते । कदाचिल्लभते प्रीतिं कदाचिदनुशोचति

Bhīṣma said: When the intellect abides in the person—the embodied self—it moves among the three states of experience. At one time it attains joy and satisfaction; at another it falls into sorrow and lamentation. Thus the mind’s responses fluctuate with conditions, and steadiness is to be sought through discernment rather than dependence on changing moods.
