सत्य–अनृत, प्रकाश–तमस्, स्वर्ग–नरक विवेचनम्

Truth and Untruth as Light and Darkness; Svarga and Naraka as Ethical Consequences

जीवित प्राणियोंका जीवात्मा कैसा है? जो मर गये, वे कहाँ चले जाते हैं? इस लोकसे उस लोकमें जानेका क्रम क्या है? ये सब बातें आप हमें बतावें ।। भीष्म उवाच अत्राप्युदाहरन्तीममितिहासं पुरातनम्‌ । भगुणाभिहितं शास्त्र भरद्वाजाय पृच्छते,भीष्मजी बोले--राजन्‌! विज्ञ पुरुष इस विषयमें एक प्राचीन इतिहासका उदाहरण दिया करते हैं, जिसमें भरद्वाजके प्रश्न करनेपर भूगुके उपदेशका उल्लेख हुआ है

bhīṣma uvāca |

atrāpy udāharantīmam itihāsaṃ purātanam |

bhṛguṇābhihitaṃ śāstraṃ bharadvājāya pṛcchate ||

Bhīṣma said: “On this very subject, the learned cite an ancient tale from the olden time. It tells how Bharadvāja questioned, and how Bhṛgu set forth the teaching—an instruction on the nature of the living self and the passage from this world to the next.”
