Bhrigu–Bharadvaja Dialogue: A Karma-Based Account of Varṇa

परिच्छिद्यैव कामानां सर्वेषां चैव कर्मणाम्‌ | मूल॑ बुद्धीन्द्रियग्रामं शकुन्तानिव पठ्जरे,“बुद्धि और इन्द्रियाँ ही समस्त कामनाओं और कर्मोकी मूल हैं। उन्हें पिंजड़ेमें बंद पक्षियोंकी तरह अपने काबूमें रखा जाय तो कोई भय नहीं है

paricchidyaiva kāmānāṁ sarveṣāṁ caiva karmaṇām | mūlaṁ buddhīndriyagrāmaṁ śakuntān iva pañjare ||

Bhīṣma said: “Having clearly delimited and restrained all desires and all actions, one should recognize that their root is the mind’s faculty of discernment together with the whole ‘flock’ of senses. If intelligence and the senses are kept under one’s control—like birds confined within a cage—then there is no cause for fear.”
