Śānti-parva 168: Śoka-nivṛtti-buddhi (The Cognition that Reduces Grief) and Piṅgalā’s Nairāśya

अनर्थस्य न कामो<स्ति तथार्थो5धर्मिण: कुत: । तस्मादुद्धिजते लोको धर्मार्थाद्‌ यो बहिष्कृत:,निर्धन मनुष्यकी कामना पूर्ण नहीं होती और धर्महीन मनुष्यको धन भी कैसे मिल सकता है। जो पुरुष धर्मयुक्त अर्थसे वज्चित है, उससे सब लोग उद्विग्न रहते हैं

anarthasya na kāmo 'sti tathārtho 'dharmiṇaḥ kutaḥ | tasmād udvijate loko dharmārthād yo bahiṣkṛtaḥ ||

Vaiśampāyana said: “For one who lacks wealth, there can be no fulfillment of desire; and for one who is unrighteous, how could there be wealth at all? Therefore, the world is disturbed and wary of that person who is excluded from righteous prosperity—one who has no dharma-grounded means of livelihood.”
