Bhishma said: One whose desires are pure, who is not entangled in sensual indulgence, whose inner self is serene, and who is a purified knower of the Self—having duly renounced ritual action, austerities, and the various branches of learning—becomes a renunciant of complete relinquishment. Such a person is honored in this world and, after death, attains the imperishable heaven, the supreme abode.
भीष्म उवाच
Purity of desire, inner serenity, and Self-knowledge culminate in true renunciation; such a renunciant gains honor in life and attains an imperishable higher state after death.
In the Shanti Parva’s instruction on dharma and liberation, Bhishma continues advising Yudhishthira by describing the qualities and fruit of an authentic renunciant (sannyasin) devoted to Self-knowledge.
