Praise of Venerating Mother, Father, and Teacher

Bhīṣma said: “In this world and even in the next, such a person’s good fame does not shine forth. Nor does he easily attain in the hereafter any other auspicious well-being that is spoken of.”
Bhīṣma teaches that unethical conduct destroys both worldly honor and otherworldly welfare: one loses good reputation here and forfeits the auspicious fruits promised for the hereafter.
In the Śānti Parva’s instruction to Yudhiṣṭhira, Bhīṣma continues a moral discourse, warning that a person who follows a blameworthy path gains neither public esteem in this life nor the declared blessings of the next.
