Sage Assembly and Yudhiṣṭhira’s Articulation of Grief
तेडभिगम्य महात्मान: पूजिताश्न यथाविधि । आसनेषु महाहेंषु विविशुस्ते महर्षय:,वे महात्मा महर्षि वहाँ पहुँचकर विधिपूर्वक पूजित हो राजाके दिये हुए बहुमूल्य आसनोंपर विराजमान हुए
teḍabhigamya mahātmānaḥ pūjitāś ca yathāvidhi | āsaneṣu mahārheṣu viviśus te maharṣayaḥ ||
Vaiśampāyana said: Having approached those great-souled sages, and having duly honoured them according to prescribed custom, the sages then took their seats upon the highly valuable seats that had been offered. The scene underscores the ethical order of hospitality—reverence to the worthy, proper ritual conduct, and the maintenance of dharma through respectful reception.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse highlights dharma expressed as proper hospitality: approaching the worthy with humility, honouring them according to established injunctions (yathāvidhi), and offering appropriate seats—outer acts that sustain ethical and social order.
A group of great sages arrive; they are formally received and honoured in the prescribed manner, and then they take their seats on valuable, honorific seats provided for them.
