Kṛpa’s Counsel to Duryodhana

nānyat karmāsti pāpīyaḥ kṣatriyasya palāyanāt |

Sañjaya said: “For a kṣatriya there is no deed more sinful than fleeing from battle. Therefore, do not abandon the ancestral dharma practiced by your forefathers; to renounce the fight and run away is the gravest moral failure for one born to protect and uphold order.”

Educational Q&A

The verse asserts a strict kṣatriya-ethic: abandoning the battlefield out of fear is the most sinful act for a warrior, because it violates one’s inherited duty to protect, stand firm, and uphold social order.

In the Shalya Parva’s war context, Sañjaya reports a moral exhortation centered on battlefield conduct—reinforcing that a kṣatriya must not forsake the fight and should adhere to the ancestral code of duty.
