Śālva’s Elephant Assault and the Counterstroke (शाल्वस्य नागारूढाभ्यवहारः)
राजन! मद्रराजकी मृत्यु हो जानेपर आपके वे सभी योद्धा भयके मारे भागने लगे। कुछ सैनिक घोड़ोंपर, कुछ हाथियोंपर और दूसरे महारथी रथोंपर आरूढ़ हो बड़े वेगसे भागे। पैदल सैनिक भी वहाँसे भाग खड़े हुए ।। द्विसाहस्राक्ष मातड्रा गिरिरूपा: प्रहारिण: । सम्प्राद्रवन् हते शल्ये अड्कुशाड्गुष्ठनोदिता:,दो हजार प्रहारकुशल पर्वताकार मतवाले हाथी शल्यके मारे जानेपर अंकुशों और पैरके अँगूठोंसे प्रेरित हो तीव्र गतिसे पलायन करने लगे
rājan! madrarājakī mṛtyu ho jānepara āpake ve sabhī yoddhā bhayake māre bhāgane lage. kucha sainika ghoṛoṃpara, kucha hāthiyoṃpara aura dūsare mahārathī rathoṃpara ārūḍha ho baṛe vegase bhāge. paidala sainika bhī vahāṃse bhāga khaṛe hue. dvisāhasrākṣā matadrā girirūpāḥ prahāriṇaḥ | samprādravan hate śalye aṅkuśāṅguṣṭhanoditāḥ ||
Sañjaya said: “O King, when the lord of Madra, Śalya, was slain, all your warriors began to flee in fear. Some escaped on horses, some on elephants, and other great chariot-fighters sped away in their cars; even the foot-soldiers ran from the field. Then, two thousand rut-maddened, mountain-like, hard-striking elephants—driven on by goads and by the pressure of their riders’ toes—also rushed off in headlong flight after Śalya’s fall.”
