Adhyāya 14: Śalya’s Missile-Pressure and the Pāṇḍava Convergence (शल्यस्य शरवर्षम्)
स च्छिन्न॑ं मुसलं दृष्टवा द्रौणि: परमकोपन:
sa cchinnaṃ musalaṃ dṛṣṭvā drauṇiḥ paramakopanaḥ
Sañjaya said: “Seeing that the mace had been shattered, Drauṇi—overcome by extreme wrath—flared up in fierce anger.”
संजय उवाच
The verse highlights how anger (kopa) can surge from wounded pride or sudden setback in conflict, pushing a warrior toward harsher actions; it implicitly warns that unchecked wrath clouds judgment and deepens the cycle of violence.
Sañjaya reports that Drauṇi (Aśvatthāmā), upon noticing that a mace/club has been broken, becomes intensely enraged—setting the emotional tone for his next response in the battle episode.
