Śalya–Bhīma Gadā-saṃnipāta and Śalya’s Bāṇa-jāla against Yudhiṣṭhira
Book 9, Chapter 11
समागम्याथ शनकैर श्वत्थामा महाबल: । तव पुत्राश्च कार्त्स्न्येन जुगुपु: शल्यमाहवे,महाराज! जैसे मेघ पर्वतपर पानी बरसाते हैं, उसी प्रकार वे शल्यपर बाणोंकी वर्षा कर रहे थे। शल्यको कुन्तीके पुत्रोंद्वारा सब ओरसे अवरुद्ध हुआ देख कृतवर्मा और कृपाचार्य क्रोधमें भरकर उनकी ओर दौड़े आये। साथ ही महापराक्रमी उलूक, सुबलपुत्र शकुनि, महाबली अश्वत्थामा तथा आपके सम्पूर्ण पुत्र भी धीरे-धीरे वहाँ आकर रणभूमिमें शल्यकी रक्षा करने लगे
samāgamya atha śanakair aśvatthāmā mahābalaḥ | tava putrāś ca kārtsnyena jugupuḥ śalyam āhave ||
Sañjaya said: Then the mighty Aśvatthāmā, approaching gradually, and all of your sons together, protected Śalya in the battle. Seeing Śalya hemmed in on every side by Kuntī’s sons, Kṛtavarmā and Kṛpācārya, inflamed with anger, rushed toward them; and with them came the valiant Ulūka and Śakuni, son of Subala, to defend Śalya amid the storm of arrows. The passage underscores how loyalty to one’s commander and factional duty intensify violence, as the warriors’ choices are driven by wrath and allegiance rather than restraint.
