Duryodhana’s Final Condition, Lamentation, and the Night’s Report

Sañjaya said: “May well-being be yours; may you attain happiness. In heaven, indeed, we shall meet again.” Having spoken thus, the high-souled king of the Kurus fell silent. In the pathos of farewell to his companions, Duryodhana relinquished his life—departing himself to the meritorious realm of heaven, while his mortal body remained lying upon the earth.

Educational Q&A

Even amid catastrophic war, the text frames death through the lens of kṣatriya ideals and posthumous destiny: a final blessing, acceptance of separation, and the belief in reunion in svarga. It highlights the contrast between the perishable body left on earth and the onward journey of the self toward its earned realm.

Sañjaya reports Duryodhana’s concluding speech: he blesses those present and predicts a reunion in heaven. After speaking, he becomes silent and gives up his life; he is said to attain svarga, while his body remains on the battlefield ground.
